The Dawnland Chronicles: Book 2
The idea for The Falconer began to develop when I read the story of Martha Ballard, a midwife (in the 18th century the term ‘midwife’ also meant ‘healer’) who worked along the Kennebec River in Maine between 1785 and 1812. I went on to read historian, Laurel Thatcher Ulrich’s The Midwife’s Tale, which blends Ballard’s colourful diary entries with Ulrich’s commentary. Martha Ballard is nothing like The Falconer’s heroine Tabby Post, except for the fact that she travelled the river in a canoe, dedicated to providing settlers with excellent medical care. Tabby took shape in my mind as a fiercely independent white midwife/healer who lives with the Indians, from whom she draws much of her knowledge.
